Jupiter ZeusThe most powerful astrological event for this week surely is the Friday, May 9th, station of Jupiter; this is the coming-to-a-stop of the planet before it begins the appearance of moving backwards in the sky, called retrogradation.  This is not actual, of course, but since different planets are moving at different speeds around the Sun, other planets take on the appearance of moving backwards for a time.

Jupiter rules the realm of ideas, of philosophy and spirituality; its effects are primarily to expand, inflate, or luminize (transfigure with supernal light) things; it fires excitement in the psyche and causes optimistic leaps of faith.  As to whether the ideas that Jupiter lights off are accurate, truthful, or of God; this is not necessarily so.  Jupiter also incites a lot of braggadocio, bluster, and exaggeration; as if the very grandiosity of the words employed themselves have the power to give legitimacy to the actions of the individual….

The astrological effect of the backwards movement of a planet is to impede, distort, and cloud the normal effects of that planet.  It is almost like a planet moving along in the ethers suddenly decides to start moving in reverse course, going against the current, it stirs up all the much from the bottom of the stream.  Astrologers also attribute a retrograde phase of a planet to the processes of recollection, review, and rumination; i.e. the planet is "going back over old ground", as it were.

Nevertheless, I have not ever witnessed much for or against retrograde planets; it seems to be a non-issue astrologically to me, with the exception of the fact that during the times that the planet in question is stationary (standing still, moving only a few minutes of a degree a day) it’s effects are multiplied on the order of ten to thirty times.  You can also look at it this way: the slower a planet moves, the deeper, more profound, and consequential its effects will be; i.e., fast moving Mercury (moving once around the Sun every 88 days) is insignificant compared to the effects brought about by transiting Pluto (moving once around the Sun every 248 years).

So, using that logic as a planet for a time becomes absolutely still, for that time its effects are extremely powerful.  Jupiter has been hovering around the last degree of sidereal Sagittarius for a few weeks now.  The very early and late degrees of any sign are considered to low power zones and any planets there are hard pressed to fully manifest its effects in life.  Some astrologers also regard the very last degree of sign (the 29th) to be extremely malefic or evil.  Jupiter

This very planetary influence delineated above will be surging at the end of this week; it should be interesting indeed though to see how the very late Sagittarian placement of Jupiter will contribute or take away from this astrological event.

Mon, May 5
Venus is involved in multiple astrological configurations today; relationships, appreciation of life’s finer points, and getting along with others will be highlighted.  An unreal force may seem to animate love and make it more than it really is between two people, and in other ways sudden relationships may come about that have an inherent instability.  In some ways today love can be a vehicle for getting out of the ever-present tendency of self-centeredness.  Later on, a great feeling of personal power may overwhelm a normal sense of appropriateness with others; compulsive or obsessive qualities may be brought out and acted on, but some people may be able to ride these energies on to greater personal self-transformation.  There could be tangible manifestations of breakdown, destruction, or decay.  (Venus quintile Node and Neptune, semisquare Uranus; Sun sesquiquadrate Pluto)

Tue, May 6
Action is the byword today, not to sit and think.  Hesitation may bring trouble knocking on the door, best go out and meet him in the street; eliminate his "power of surprise".  Impulsivity and the over-sensitivity of the ego can be plainly seen.  An abrupt move today, sometimes stepping on another’s toes may in fact be what is necessary.  (Sun quintile Mars)

Wed, May 7
The power to persuade, educate, or illuminate will be enhanced especially in the early hours US time. Be careful though of exaggeration or downfalls through neglect of details.  We’re building up to Friday’s station and an overall Jupiterean enthusiasm will be waxing.  Passionate or competitive relationships will be accented as well today. (Mercury sesquiquadrate Jupiter, Mars quincunx Juno)

Thur, May 8
The build-up to tomorrow continues with Venus aspecting Jupiter today, amplifying love and happiness, maybe at times activating a frivolous or self-indulgent kind of love.  Nevertheless all artistic, cultural, and spiritual activities should be favored. (Venus tridecile Jupiter)

Fri, May 9
A great deal of excitement could be generated; hyperbole and self-righteous self-aggrandizement.  Enthusiasm as an emotion can be manipulated itself.  Figures wrapping themselves in the flag, for the glory of God or some other higher-than-normal reason may push the envelope just a bit too much.  But when all the excitement fades, there is no net change.  (Jupiter stationary retrograde)

Sat, May 10
Later in the day a tendency to fudge the facts in favor of what we would like them to be may be activated.  Creativity and inspiration will be enhanced, however seeing things clearly though our biases may be a challenge nevertheless. Later on, in the Pacific and Asian time zones, Mars aspects Pluto setting off fanatical/obsessive tendencies and serve to push things to their limits. (Mercury tridecile Neptune, Mars quincunx Pluto)

Sun, May 11, Mother’s Day
This Mother’s Day may be a little subdued, maybe some of the anxieties that drove earlier family dynamics may reanimate; but at the same time this will be a tremendous opportunity to see and overcome with wisdom now situations which have heretofore seemed to be unchangeable. (Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn)

Mon, May 12
Significant relationship developments are at hand, especially how power is distributed in them. In other areas a feeling of nothing being impossible can help set the stage for good things down the road; the problem is in internalizing and making permanent in your psyche today’s influences.  Whatever you think is possible, as long as you can believe it. (Sun trine Jupiter, biquintile Juno)
